To support our work, we are now seeking a Brussels based Head of Policy & Membership Affairs (m/f/d) ad Interim

The Brussels-based Secretariat supports the activities of the ALDE Party, organizes its meetings, manages its external communication, provides strategic consultancy and organizational development, facilitates European policy development and networking amongst liberal parties.

Job background

The unit for policy development and membership affairs leads ALDE Party’s policy and membership development. It aims at formulating transnational policy proposals, facilitates an exchange of policy ideas and best practices among member parties, drafts resolutions and aims at shaping and promoting ALDE Party’s narrative, presence and influence on the European stage.

The unit serves to create a favorable pathway for European Liberals to continue growing with a view towards the next European Parliament elections in 2024, provide research and insights for its stakeholders, i.e. liberal MEPs, other relevant EU institution members and ALDE member parties.

We are looking for an interim person for leading the unit, during the absence of the current Head of Unit, having already familiarity with the Liberal family, interested in taking up that interim position until the return of the Head of Unit in second half of 2022, as well as to stay on in a coordinating function towards the 2024 European Parliament election.

Main Responsibilities

The person we are looking for will be responsible for managing the Policy and Membership Affairs unit composed of 4 members plus the Head of Unit him/herself.

In addition, she/he will be responsible for these (and other) areas:

  • Managing ongoing policy working groups on relevant timely issues with key relevant stakeholders/office holders from national member parties and key EU level politicians
  • Offering analysis on liberal party developments across Europe and recommend actions on membership development
  • Liaise closely with relevant counterparts in ALDE Party’s parliamentary group and with member parties.
  • Support the Secretary General and Bureau of ALDE Party in all political and member party matters
  • Developing ALDE Party’s narrative ahead of the 2024 EU elections by identifying major themes and trends to sharpen European Liberals’ messaging.

Profile

  • Experience with personal management to lead a team of colleagues
  • University degree (Masters level) in Social Sciences/Humanities
  • Preferably 8 years of post-graduation working experience including a strong focus on policy analysis and development either in a national or European political context
  • Strong acumen for/understanding of EU policy topics and understanding of European political landscape
  • Ability to adopt a “campaign mindset” and translate abstract policy into easy-to-digest, highly engaging materials
  • Strong ability to work with multiplicity of various partners and deliver multi-stakeholder projects, both inside and outside the party
  • Creative mind and ability to proactively suggest content
  • Solid conviction/public speaking skills
  • Pro-active and responsive with ability to quickly understand tasks and situations
  • Efficiency, strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a highly organized, practical approach
  • Strong identification with liberal values and policies of ALDE Party and its members
  • Experience in party politics as a party official, candidate or volunteer desirable
  • Fluency in spoken and written English essential, the knowledge of other languages is an asset
