Seas at Risk is looking for a Marine Policy Intern (m/f/d)

Purpose of the internship

SAR is seeking an intern (“CIP” contract) to support the work of the marine litter policy officer of Seas At Risk, who is working on plastic pollution prevention at both the EU and the national levels. This internship is expected to last 6 months, with a focus on the promotion of best practices to phase out single-use plastics across Europe, and on EU level advocacy work on microplastics. The successful candidate would ideally start working in December 2021 and be based in our Brussels office, yet with some flexibility for homeworking.

Main responsibilities

  • Support the marine litter policy officer in her advocacy work at the EU level, on topics like microplastics, single-use plastics, taking part in some direct advocacy actions targeting MEPs and other EU officials;
  • Represent SAR, in a team with the marine litter policy officer, in its coalition work at the European level, involving other European environmental NGOs working on plastic;
  • Coordinate a specific project, in partnership with SAR members and relevant national stakeholders, consisting in the collection, update and dissemination of best practices to phase out single-use plastics across Europe;
  • Collaborate with SAR communication team on plastic topics and our interactive map update, in relation to the above-mentioned project on European best practices;
  • Assisting with the coordination of policy activities with SAR members and partners;
  • Assisting with the organisation of events, either internal or with EU partners.

Qualification, experience, knowledge

  • A university degree/postgraduate level in a relevant area (European public policy, environmental law, international relations, marine biology or equivalent);
  • Some knowledge of the EU institutions’ functioning and decision-making system;
  • Previous internship/working experience on EU environmental policy or plastic pollution a plus;
  • Excellent oral and writing skills in English, fluency is required (both oral and written);
  • Additional EU languages are a plus (e.g. French, Greek, Dutch, Spanish…);
  • Good computing skills;
  • A passion for the environment and the EU will help.
