Government Relations & Public Affairs (GRPA) is ABB’s center of expertise and competence for ABB’s relations and dealings with governments and public officials worldwide. GRPA leads and coordinates all Group-relevant public policy initiatives and advises the Chairman, the CEO, Executive Committee members, Division Presidents and local business leaders in their interactions with public officials. GRPA also drives and coordinates Group-relevant cross-border trade opportunities as well as global projects with a political dimension.

Your responsibilities

  • Strategic & operational service delivery: Implement global GRPA strategy to support ABB’s strategy and business activities.Strengthen the GRPA function within ABB, defining roles and responsibilities, and creating efficient processes in line with ABB’s business interests. Ensure that government-relations activities protect and strengthen ABB’s brand, reputation and business activities. Prepare, coordinate and align all external activities, positioning and messaging with other Group functions, especially Corporate Communications, Sustainability and Legal & Integrity.
  • External relationships: Support and coordinate interaction with government officials for the Chairman, CEO, other Executive Committee members and Division Presidents. Coordinate participation in associations and bodies important to ABB with the goal of influencing standards and policies, in close coordination with the Business Areas, Divisions and Legal & Integrity.
  • Analysis: Monitor, analyze and interpret developments in the legislative, regulatory, political and economic environment and advise senior management on how these trends may impact the organization’s business interests.
  • Consultancy: Support the Executive Committee and senior management in their interactions with governmental bodies and officials, trade associations, business and selected NGOs.
  • Integrity: Communicate and coordinate with business leaders, line managers and other relevant employees to ensure that the organization’s dealings with government agencies are conducted ethically, legally and according to ABB’s policies and standards.
  • Budget: Accountability for global GRPA function budget.


Your background

  • Minimum 10 to 15 years of experience in global government relations, public affairs, public relations or similar roles.
  • University degree, preferably master’s level, in international relations/political science/ business administration or related disciplines.
  • Able to maintain both a strategic and implementation focused mindset.
  • Flexible with the ability to incorporate multiple viewpoints, constraints and challenges.
  • Experience of managing remote teams of experienced professionals with high-level responsibilities, i.e.: managing relations with governments.
  • Accustomed to dealing with high-ranking public officials.
  • Good understanding of ABB’s business activities.
  • In-depth knowledge of global issues (e.g.: energy and industry topics and climate change) and international affairs; good understanding of business and economics, and the policy and law-making process.
  • Analytical and creative thinking, strategic instincts with a strong understanding of communication processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications and advocacy skills to influence, negotiate and persuade.
  • Ability to set priorities and focus on execution.
  • Fluent English; additional languages are a plus.
  • Multi-cultural and multi-dimensional to support international strategic processes and teams.
  • Strong team player.
  • Strong ethics and high integrity.
