Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) campaigns for sustainable, just societies and for the protection of the environment. We are an environmental justice network uniting 32 national organisations across Europe and a part of the of Friends of the Earth International, the largest global grassroots network.

Our vision is of a peaceful and sustainable world, founded on social, economic, racial, gender and environmental justice and free from all forms of domination and exploitation.

We are looking for a Communications Coordinator to support FoEE (organisation and network) to progress towards its vision, mission and strategy through consistent and impactful external and internal communications.

In this role you will develop and deliver our communications strategy while coordinating and leading the communications team. You will work with all of FoEE’s campaign teams to resist root causes and false solutions to environmental and social injustice, mobilise people power and communicate transformative and integrated solutions. You will also have an active role in the the leadership and management of FoEE through your contribution to the Coordination and Management Team.

This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an environmental justice NGO with a dedicated and passionate team of about 30 people working at the European level and a vibrant European network.

Key responsibilities:

  • Guide and empower the communications team;
  • Coordinate development and implementation of communication strategies, messaging and activity plans, in close collaboration with colleagues in Brussels and in the network;
  • Coordinate communication plans between the teams/campaigns;
  • Ensure and maintain the high quality standard for all external and internal communications tools, materials and events;
  • Preserve the reputation of FoEE as a reliable source of expert information;
  • Create and maintain good relationships with key journalists and media;
  • Ensure all office departments integrate communications into their planning and adhere to FoEE’s identity guidelines and agreed messaging, protocols and ways of working, including intersectional and anti-racist communications approaches;
  • Provide proactive and solution-oriented input and advice to office processes, in particular on communications activities;
  • Support and contribute to successful fundraising efforts by leading on communication and story-telling projects;
  • Coordinate tracking and reporting analytics of communication tools and strategise for improvement;
  • Oversee and facilitate the maintenance of an active network of communicators from member organisations;
  • Contribute to the organisational management and leadership by active participation in the Coordination and Management Team and other organisational development activities;
  • Identify and pursue opportunities among the office and network to share and strengthen knowledge.

Requirements (skills and qualifications):

Essential

  • Demonstrable commitment to FoEE’s vision, mission and values regarding environmental and social justice;
  • At least 2 years experience in managing and mentoring a creative team; effective leadership and team development skills;
  • At least 5 years relevant communications experience in a busy network-based organisation working on multiple topics;
  • Fluent in written and spoken English (native speaker standard), which is the working language for this post;
  • Ability to communicate about complex issues;
  • Excellent creative writing and editorial skills; Persuasive, experienced storyteller;
  • Strong sense of a news story and excellent understanding of journalists’ needs, press and media processes;
  • Knowledge and experience of developing and delivering a communications strategy, ideally at an international level;
  • Experience of project management;
  • Proficient ICT user in range of relevant software e.g., Microsoft Office, CMS, CiviCRM, social media tools, design software, video/audio editing;
  • Excellent time management and priority setting skills;
  • Assertive and diplomatic negotiator;
  • Able to negotiate contracts with suppliers such as printers and designers;
  • Able to work under short deadlines and respond to urgent media demands.

Desirable

  • Experience in the EU environment;
  • Knowledge of environmental justice issues and topics;
  • Knowledge of and experience in working with values and frames and storytelling in communications;
  • Experience of drafting and managing a communications budget;
  • Experience in working or volunteering with civil society and public advocacy campaigning organisations;
  • Able to speak one or more European languages;
  • Knowledge, skills and experience of providing training/workshops for colleagues.

The position requires occasional evening and weekend work as well as occasional international travel.

We offer:

This position is offered as a full-time position in Brussels, Belgium for a period of twelve months, after which it is expected to be made permanent. We offer a salary between € 3,894 and 5,105 gross, depending on a competency assessment.

We also offer full coverage of train travel in case of commuting within Belgium.
