Where does inequality still exist in Germany today? We have compiled a number of studies and analyses that address this issue.
The gender pay gap currently stands at 18%, according to a recent statement by the Federal Statistical Office. It is particularly striking that eastern Germany is more progressive than the west in this regard: here, the gap is significantly smaller, mainly due to historical circumstances such as a higher employment rate among women and comprehensive childcare – the legacy of the GDR is evident. Inequality also exists in the housing market: in major German cities, one in three families lives in a home that is too small, according to a study by the German Economic Institute. According to the study, 6% of all homes in major German cities are too small. People with a migrant background are particularly affected, with one in five households living in cramped conditions. A new publication by Die Zeit (€) shows for the first time where the income boundaries lie in these cities. Journalists surveyed where rich and poor households are located and then displayed the results on maps. This clearly shows which geographical markers—streets, rivers, train stations—correlate with high or low incomes. Also related to income level is access to education. A recently published analysis by the journal Nature Human Behaviour has shown that children with low socioeconomic status have experienced particularly large learning deficits during the pandemic.
