About Eckiger Tisch

Since 2010, Eckiger Tisch has been calling on behalf of those affected for the investigation of cases of abuse, help for those affected, and appropriate compensation for the damage caused to them. To this day, those affected are still waiting in vain for these three demands to be met.

Investigation

The “MHG Study” published in September 2018 by the German Bishops' Conference has made it clear how little willingness there is within the Catholic Church to investigate past cases of abuse in a concrete and comprehensive manner and to allow for an independent investigation. This study only investigated figures, namely 3,677 “documented” victims and 1,670 priests as perpetrators of abuse. Where these acts took place is kept secret, as is the question of where these (unnamed) perpetrators are today. No concrete connections are mentioned.

How many people have been affected by abuse by Catholic priests?

We now know that abuse by Catholic priests is much more widespread than the results of the MHG study might suggest. A recent study by researchers at Ulm University Hospital shows that in recent decades, more than 100,000 people have been and continue to be affected by sexual abuse by Catholic priests.

Help

Since 2010, a large number of people affected by sexual abuse by Catholic priests have turned to ECKIGER TISCH Tisch for advice, support, help, etc. They describe how they have received little help and support from the Catholic Church. Many have had negative experiences in their contact with the Church, and a great many victims want nothing more to do with the organization that protected the perpetrators for decades. People who were abused by Catholic priests in their childhood have to live with the destructive effects of the abuse for the rest of their lives. Many areas of their lives can be marked by far-reaching impairments:

  • Many victims experience significant problems in their interpersonal relationships, bonds, and partnerships later in life.

  • Often, their relationship with their own bodies has been damaged, and intimacy and sexuality are therefore problematic for many victims.

  • Many victims were and are unable to develop professionally and financially, and many also live in economic hardship.

  • Many sufferers experience psychological problems such as depression, addiction, or other mental illnesses throughout their lives.

  • Some sufferers who did not have the strength to continue living with what they had endured ended their lives.
