Green Liberal Party of Switzerland

The Green Liberal Party was founded in 2004 in the canton of Zurich. For the very first time in Switzerland, a political party combined ecology and economics. Within a year, approximately 300 members had joined. The goal of the new party was—and remains—to maintain a balance among the three pillars of sustainability—environment, social issues, and the economy—while combining an ecological core with liberal policies. In 2006, the GLP ran in elections for the first time with its own slates; in the cities of Winterthur, Dübendorf, Uster, and Opfikon, it won up to two seats in each municipal council. In the cantonal council elections in April 2007, the GLP also managed to win ten seats in the Zurich Cantonal Council right off the bat.
