Austria joined the United Nations in 1955 and is a member of the World Trade Organization and most of the other International Organisations located in Geneva. The Austrian Mission represents the Austrian Government in the Geneva based organisations, handling all dealings and communications with these organisations as well as with the 100-plus countries that maintain missions in Geneva. This “multilateral” role of the Austrian Mission dealing with many countries and organisations is separate from the “bilateral” diplomacy of the Austrian Embassy in the Swiss capital Bern, which handles relations between the Austrian and the Swiss Government.
