Which professions are currently in high demand? The Bertelsmann Foundation answers this question with its 2023 profession ranking.
Which professions are currently in high demand? Where is there a greater need for workers compared to previous years – and where is there less? The Bertelsmann Foundation answers these questions with its 2023 profession ranking. The analysis is based on an evaluation of around 45 million online job advertisements posted between 2019 and 2023. For around 1,200 occupations, the analysis determined how much demand there is for them, whether there are regional differences, and how demand has changed over time.
The results of the ranking show that in almost half of Germany's districts, logistics assistants are the most in-demand profession. Salespeople also appear at the top of the district rankings. Nationwide, however, office and secretarial staff rank first in job advertisements. Over the last three and a half years, there has been a particular increase in job advertisements in the health, social services, teaching, and education sectors. Between 2019 and 2020, the proportion of advertisements in this sector rose by 3.5% of the total number of advertisements – certainly an effect of the coronavirus pandemic, during which around 9,000 nursing staff left their jobs. Another factor likely triggered by COVID-19 is a slump in job advertisements in the service, tourism, and trade sectors, which can be attributed to lockdowns, travel restrictions, and other measures. In 2023, however, job advertisements in this sector were almost back to pre-COVID-19 levels. Currently, it is once again becoming clear that there is a particular demand for skilled workers and managers who perform (highly) specialized work.
