To mark the 75th anniversary of the German Basic Law, the communications associations DPRG, BdKom, and GPRA are launching the initiative “Communication strengthens democracy.”
“Communication strengthens democracy”: Under this motto, the German communications associations DPRG, BdKom, and GPRA are launching an initiative for democracye on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law. The importance of communication for democracy was already enshrined in the first articles of the constitution, according to the president of the DPRG. Therefore, transparent and sincere communication is essential for the German communications associations. At the same time, the associations are concerned about the misuse of communication: disinformation, hate speech, and incitement hinder dialogue and undermine democracy. Through their work, the associations aim to raise awareness of this issue and, at the same time, strengthen democratic values.
These values are also enshrined in the German Communication Code: This code considers public discourse, which is also shaped by the companies belonging to the communications associations, to be essential for opinion-forming and decision-making in a democracy. It therefore requires communications experts to uphold fundamental rights and prohibits inhumane practices.
As part of the “Communication Strengthens Democracy” initiative, the primary aim is to organize joint events for communication professionals that serve to inform, educate, and facilitate discussion, with events scheduled to take place until fall 2025. A series of events already planned will focus on examples of good practice by companies and false or manipulative communication practices. Furthermore, the 2024 Communication Congress, which will take place in Berlin in September, will also focus on this topic.
These topics also caught our attention:
Political communication: German companies have also taken a clear stand against right-wing extremism and in favor of democracy. To honor particularly successful campaigns in this field, the media company UNICEPTA presented this year's Thought Leadership Award to the communications team at Deutsche Bahn.
Trade unions: Two-thirds of public sector employees would like to see a four-day week. This could become a point of contention in the upcoming collective bargaining rounds with ver.di, writes the SZ (€).
Industry: Gesamtmetall boss Stefan Wolf sees the beginnings of deindustrialization. The Tagesspiegel reports on the warnings he issued in this context.
