New INWOC study shows: Despite global uncertainties, democratic leadership remains dominant – there is no widespread comeback of authoritarian models.
Is authoritarian management making a comeback?
This question is addressed in the latest New Work Barometer 2025 published by the Institute for New Work and Coaching (INWOC) at SRH University Heidelberg. The barometer provides in-depth insights into current developments and analyzes trends and their impact on the world of work on an annual basis. This year's focus topics are the use of AI in the work context and the role of power in organizations.
In view of geopolitical and technological change, the researchers suspected that they would also be able to identify an “authoritarian shift” here. However, the results report shows that the democratic management style is still the most widespread in the companies surveyed and, contrary to the researchers' expectations, there is no evidence of a general trend back to authoritarian patterns. At the same time, there are industries in which hierarchical tendencies are more clearly visible – for example, in manufacturing, transportation, and public administration, as Prof. Dr. habil. Carsten Schermuly, managing director of INWOC, explains.
