The FSJ is a programme for young adults. They undertake this year of voluntary service because they wish to get involved in social causes and discover their abilities and limits. They make the most of this opportunity for personal development and take time to explore their career options. They improve their chances of being accepted onto a vocational training course in the social sector; sometimes, the FSJ also serves as a bridge to fill a gap year before starting such a course. However, many also want to get stuck in and lend a hand in a practical way between finishing school and starting university. ‘FSJ participants’ don’t want to sit back and watch passively; they want to get actively involved and make the world a better place!
