The ESF is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the support of excellent science through the provision of specialized services. We operate in the EU and wider European environment and collaborate with major scientific stakeholders. In the frame of our development, we invite applications for a Communications Project Officer.

As Communications Project Officer, you’ll manage multiple tasks for EU-funded projects and scientific communities, spanning the entire process from planning through to implementation of the tasks and operational use, ensuring that the objectives are delivered within budget, on time and to the quality required, and that ESF’s visibility within the European research community, member organisations and expert committees is enhanced.

The position will work with ESF’s “space cluster”, an internal team that focuses on space sciences related projects and communities. An interest in space science and industry is considered a plus, but is not required. Additional contributions to ESF corporate communications and/or interactions with other ESF teams are expected, depending on activities and candidate’s profile.

This position will involve:

  • Engaging stakeholders and managing communities, namely the European Space Sciences Committee and the Europlanet Society;
  • Contributing to communication activities within EU framework projects;
  • Maintaining and managing project websites: updating content, assessing performance, performing CMS and plugin updates;
  • Editing digital newsletters;
  • Managing social media accounts: producing digital content to engage with online audiences;
  • Managing media relations;
  • Participating in the coordination of high-level international events;
  • Promoting high-level events (i.e. stakeholder engagement, social media management, content creation, graphic design);
  • Representing ESF in external meetings when necessary;
  • Providing communication insights and expertise to business development efforts.

The Communications Project Officer should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • 1-3 years professional experience in communication/science communication at corporate/project level;
  • Web management experience; familiarity with CMS software, specifically WordPress, CSS and HTML;
  • Experience in developing social media accounts and managing promotional campaigns;
  • Experience in graphic design and familiarity with edition software, such as Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Knowledge in video editing will be considered an asset;
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, full proficiency in English;
  • Ability to assimilate complex information and communicate concise and clear messages to non-scientific audiences;
  • Experience related to space sciences will be considered an asset.

  • Proven organisational skills and capacity to deliver on allocated tasks and respond in a timely manner to deadlines;
  • Excellent communication skills across cultural and scientific boundaries, showing diplomacy and tolerance;
  • Excellent presentation skills;
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative.

Employment conditions:

  • The position is expected to be full-time (100% FTE) and will start as soon as possible;
  • The contract is offered for a duration of 18 months + possible extension;
  • The person selected for the position will be working from the ESF Headquarters in Strasbourg. The position will involve some travel.
