We are looking for a

Senior Research Fellow / Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) – Electricity Markets

full- (40 hours/week) or part-time.

The planned start date is 01 September 2023. The exact start date is open for negotiation. The contract is initially limited to three years. The appointment is conditional on approval by the funding agency.

The successful candidate will join the team of Lion Hirth at the Hertie School’s Centre for Sustainability.

Your tasks:

We are seeking a passionate and driven Postdoctoral Researcher to join our dynamic team at the Centre for Sustainability at The Hertie School. As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you’ll have the opportunity to pursue your own independent research agenda, exploring the exciting and ever-evolving field of energy markets and electricity systems.

With the recent 2022 Energy Crisis at the forefront of our minds, your research will focus on essential questions such as risk mitigation and sharing, public long-term arrangements like contracts for differences, and scaling up investments in renewables. You will employ state-of-the-art empirical methods and theoretical-analytical models from economics and finance. Working closely with Prof. Lion Hirth and the energy team at the Centre for Sustainability, you will have the opportunity to mentor junior researchers and guide project staff.

As a part of the “Ariadne II” research project, your research will also produce highly visible short assessments of energy policy targeted at policymakers, with the potential to attract significant media attention, ensuring your research is visible and has immediate relevance to Germany’s and Europe’s energy policy and makes a real impact on the development of the energy sector.

Your work will be published in leading peer-reviewed disciplinary and interdisciplinary journals, including general interest, energy economics, and general energy outlets. We encourage joint research and co-authoring with our outstanding researchers across all seniority levels at the Centre, the School, and beyond.

Your profile:

  • Ph.D. in economics, finance, engineering, or related field
  • Strong background in energy economics, electricity markets, econometrics, or policy analysis
  • Proven track record of academic excellence
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team

We offer:

A stimulating international and diverse environment in multiple areas of social science, high-quality teaching and public policy. The Hertie School is a vibrant academic community that emphasizes excellence in research and teaching as well as an interdisciplinary perspective. Our school has been certified as a family friendly work environment in higher education and an equal opportunity employer. Severely disabled applicants are given preferential consideration in the event of equal qualification.

Please submit your application here in one PDF file (incl. a CV, a cover letter describing your research plans and interest, and two writing samples).

Deadline for full consideration is 31 May 2023.

Please contact Lion Hirth for further information about the position.
