HelpAge International is looking for an entry level Advocacy and Communications Assistant, someone looking to build a career in policy, advocacy or campaigning on global issues. The position holder will support HelpAge International’s Ageing agenda in the Europe region and will possess knowledge and understanding of European institutions and governments.

The location of this post is flexible. The postholder may be located anywhere in Europe where they have the legal right to work & live.

Key areas for impact/influence and responsibilities:

This role will support HelpAge International’s engagement with Network members in Europe and support the development and delivery of advocacy plans to raise HelpAge’s profile and influence with European Institutions and in key countries.
Under the supervision and guidance of the Regional Representative for Europe, you will:

  • Work with the Regional Representative to align HelpAge’s advocacy and external engagement work in the region with internal teams, network members and key external stakeholders
  • Support context and horizon scanning by gathering, analysing and sharing relevant information on EU institutions and member states
  • Monitor policy and funding developments in areas of interest including development, humanitarian and human rights policy
  • Draft internal briefings, talking points, toolkits and updates for HelpAge staff and European network members
  • Work with the Communications team to support production of external publications and products for European stakeholders
  • Provide support to organise events and meetings
  • Participate in internal and external meetings, prepare minutes and report back to the Regional Representative
  • Support network coordination in the region by ensuring effective record keeping and database and information management and supporting network communication
  • Support coordination of travel within the region, including advocacy visits from members, partners and older people in Lower and Middle Income Countries
  • Provide support to communications and media activities in the region as required, working closely with the Global Communications Team

Let’s talk about you

This is an entry level position that would suit someone looking to build a career in policy, advocacy or campaigning on global issues.
You will be someone with:

  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of European institutions and governments, including through academic study
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, international development and humanitarian policy or practice
  • Demonstrable interest in advocacy and campaigning for human rights and/or social justice issues
  • Ability to analyse and synthesise information
  • Good written and verbal communication
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities in English.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft package – Word, Excel, Email

Desirable:

  • Working knowledge of second European language
  • Demonstrable interest in global ageing issues
  • We are particularly interested to hear from candidates familiar with society and politics in the Nordic countries
