Startup Boom or Stopgap Measure?

More business startups usually mean good news.

New momentum, fresh ideas, and growth impulses for the economy. So it’s no wonder that the rising demand for startup services offered by the Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHKs) initially appears to be a positive trend. However, a closer look reveals a different picture.

This is because the start-up consultations rarely reflect a genuine entrepreneurial spirit. Rather, well-qualified employees from shrinking industrial sectors are increasingly turning to self-employment in the face of layoffs and bankruptcies. The share of start-ups driven by a lack of alternative employment opportunities stands at 36%—the highest it has been in 11 years.

According to the Chambers of Industry and Commerce, however, as interest rises, so do the weaknesses in the business plans submitted. Nearly half show deficiencies in basic business knowledge, and 44% have clear gaps in their financial planning. One positive highlight is the proportion of women seeking startup consulting, which remains high at 44%.
