According to the Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor 2024, 51 of the world's largest companies are not doing enough to protect the climate.
51 of the world's largest companies are not doing enough to achieve the 1.5 degree target for mitigating climate change: instead of the necessary emission reduction of at least 43%, most companies are expecting a reduction of only 30%. These findings are summarized in the Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor 2024, published yesterday, which is compiled annually by the NewClimate Institute in cooperation with Carbon Market Watch.
The monitor examines the climate targets of large companies worldwide and evaluates them in terms of their transparency, integrity, and improvement in recent years. Nineteen companies showed improvements: Danone, Mars, and the Volvo Group, for example, updated their plans and are now on track to meet ambitious climate protection targets. At the same time, the NewClimate Institute still sees strategies at work in most companies that either do not go far enough or are too ambitious in their goals and are therefore considered unrealistic.
Overall, the monitor concludes that none of the companies examined has a climate strategy of “high integrity.” The authors therefore call for a strategy shift away from voluntary standards and toward binding, effective regulation.
