The EU IUU Fishing Coalition – made up of The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), Oceana, The Nature Conservancy, The Pew Charitable Trusts and WWF – is looking for an energetic and passionate

Communications Coordinator

to lead the Coalition’s ambitious plans to increase awareness of its objectives among decision makers and the wider public.

Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing has a severe impact on marine environments and the livelihoods and food security of millions of people who live in coastal communities across the world. The EU has stated it has a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to IUU fishing, but much remains to be done to put this ambition into practice and ensure the EU is a credible and effective global leader in this fight.

As Communications Coordinator you will work with the policy and communications officers of the Coalition to prepare joint messages and engaging communications products. You will persuade decision makers and key stakeholders of the threat that IUU fishing poses and convince them to take action to end it, in particular increasing transparency in fisheries governance.

Ideal candidates for this position will be highly organised, creative and collaborative, and will be willing and able to refine and deliver an ambitious communications strategy that will help the Coalition to achieve its campaign goals.

If you are an ambitious, talented professional with outstanding communication, people and project management skills, and have a passion for driving real change, this is the role for you.

Key responsibilities:

  • Leading the design and implementation of the Coalition’s communication strategy, ensuring high-impact communications are at the heart of the coalition’s campaign planning;
  • Producing engaging communications material for upcoming events, report releases and other key communications opportunities (conferences, thematic days etc.);
  • Developing relationships with target media contacts;
  • Preparing content for social media and managing social media accounts;
  • Drafting and disseminating press releases that secure increased coverage for the Coalition’s work;
  • Coordinating approvals, translations and the use of external agencies for creative work such as report layout and short film production;
  • Maintaining and updating the Coalition’s website (IUUwatch.eu);
  • Working with national communication officers of the Coalition members;
  • Organising events, both online and in-person.

Desired experience and skills include:

  • 3 or more years experience in a communications role, preferably in an organisation whose mission aligns with that of the Coalition;
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing high-impact communications strategies, ideally for multi-stakeholder groups;
  • Proven coordination skills and experience of working with multiple, diverse stakeholders;
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading ability;
  • Experience with the effective use of social media (particularly Twitter);
  • Knowledge and experience of working with or within EU institutions and/or experience working on ocean and conservation issues;
  • Knowledge of InDesign, WordPress and other key communication software tools;
  • Fluent written and spoken English is essential, while knowledge of other EU languages is a significant asset;
  • Photo and/or video editing skills desirable, but not required.

Applications:

Please send your CV and cover letter explaining why you are the right person for the job to: recruitment@ejfoundation.org and andrew.carryer@ejfoundation.org.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Please include the subject line “Application_Communications Coordinator_(YOUR FULL NAME)” in your email.

Candidates must have the legal right to work in the EU and/or the UK.
