Doctors Without Borders was founded in France in 1971 under the name Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). In the years and decades that followed, committed supporters around the world established their own associations of the organization. In 1993, the German section was created.
Today, Médecins Sans Frontières is a global network with 26 member associations providing emergency medical aid in more than 70 countries. Within the network, the member associations have joined together to form six operational centers. There, several sections meet to make joint project decisions and conclude financing agreements.
The German section is part of the Operational Center Amsterdam (OCA).
