About the BBK

The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance has a legal mandate to protect the population in the event of a defense situation. In addition, we raise public awareness of the need to prepare for such events. Together with its partners, the BBK ensures a safe life in Germany – around the clock, 365 days a year.

Civil protection tasks of the BBK

  • Self-protection

  • Warning the population

  • Protective structures

  • Residence regulations

  • Disaster control in accordance with § 11 ZSKG

  • Measures to protect health

  • Measures to protect cultural assets

How does German civil protection work?

To ensure that people in Germany can live safely, we have a society-wide security system at the level of the

  • federal government,

  • states, and

  • local authorities.

Police forces, the armed forces, intelligence services, civil protection actors, and infrastructure operators are all part of the security system.
