The Future of Life Institute has come a long way since its inception. Originally run by volunteers coordinated by co-founder Victoria Krakovna, it now has more than 20 full-time staff around the world, mostly divided into teams for policy, outreach, and grant-making.
The Future of Life Institute is made of its Board, staff and external advisors. Collectively we represent a diverse range of expertise, having come to the Institute from governance institutions, industry and academia, and a variety of disciplines, including the behavioural sciences, medicine, machine learning, engineering, law and design.
The way certain technologies are developed and deployed has far-reaching consequences for all life on Earth. This is currently true of artificial intelligence, biotechnologies, and nuclear technology.
If handled correctly, these technologies could change the world in ways that significantly improve life, both for people living today and for all those yet to be born. They could be used to treat and eradicate disease, strengthen democratic processes, and transform education.
If handled improperly, they could have the opposite effect. They could lead to catastrophic events that bring humanity to its knees and perhaps even push us to the brink of extinction.
The Future of Life Institute has set itself the task of steering transformative technologies away from extreme, large-scale risks and towards the benefit of life.
