About Pro Alps

Pro Alps works together with supporters to promote a sustainable transport policy in order to protect the unique and ecologically sensitive Alpine region and preserve it as a habitat.

The Alpine Initiative association was founded 36 years ago and launched an initiative. Five years later, the people and the cantons approved the “federal popular initiative to protect the Alpine region from transit traffic (Alpine Initiative)”. Since then, the shift of transit freight traffic from road to rail has been enshrined in the constitution. This laid the foundation for the successful model of Swiss transport policy.

Without our ongoing persistent work, Switzerland would today be overwhelmed by an even greater avalanche of traffic. And yet our goals have not yet been achieved: after many years of slow progress, the shift of transalpine freight traffic is moving in the wrong direction—there are once again more trucks on the transit roads.
